The Black Dwarf
by Walter Scott
The Black Dwarf is set in the hills of Liddesdale, a region Scott has known intimately since he made a ballad hunt for the Minstrelsy Scottish border. The plot itself is based on a series of boundary line ballads. Hewfott's pill Gobbie Elliot's adventures turn to the Black Dwarf for help, gather strength, and "encircle" westburnflat with parallel events in the ballads "Jamie Telfer from Fair Dodhead" and "Support War".
