The Bride of Lammermoor
by Walter Scott
Dark prophecies and ominous symbolic events fell into the romance of Ravenswood's master Edgar and Lucy Ashton, the daughter of the man who expelled the old Ravenswood clan from her ancestral homeland. William Ashton, the cunning and self-seeking Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, used his power to claim the Ravenswood estate, leaving Edgar to ponder his family's wrongdoings in the lone tower of the wolf Craig. His desire for revenge is challenged and eventually defeated by Sir William's love for his caring daughter, but the new spirit of reconciliation is frustrated by political differences and the strong opposition of his oppressive mother, Lucy.
