The Cask of Amontillado
by Edgar Allan Poe
Angered by the insults of his friend Fortunato, a nobleman, Monressor plans to kill him during a carnival while the man is drunk, sealing him alive behind brick walls through migration. He lures Fortunato by saying that the Amontillado pipe, about 130 gallons, is out of season from what he believes to be a rare and valuable sherry wine. He wants his friend's expert opinion on the matter. Unaware of Montresor's true intentions, Fortunato travels with him to the wine cellars of the Palazzo, where they travel through the deep catacombs far below the house. The result of this tense story is, to put it mildly, unforgettable.
