The Cat of Bubastes
by G. A. Henty
Bubasta's holy cat was accidentally killed; Now the young Chebron must pay for the crime with his own life, for this is the law of the pagans in Egypt, 1250 BC. Chebron, the son of the Egyptian priest's high priest, escapes for life, taking his sister Cape, Amuba, one of the native slaves, and a few of his friends with him. They escape the tightly guarded Egyptian migration, but find themselves in alien and dangerous lands, inhabited by a completely different human culture. Along the way, a traveling group of refugees meet and befriend a Jewish girl who exposes them to very strange ideas, including worshipping the "one true God." This arduous journey between time, traditions and religion gives an adventurous and accurate picture of the ancient people of Egyptian history.
