The Cruise of the Snark

by Jack London

Snark had two poles and was 43 feet long near the water line, and London claims it spent thirty thousand dollars on it. The Snark was primarily a sailboat, but it also had an auxiliary 70-horsepower engine. Then it was equipped with a lifeboat. In 1906, the writer Jack London began building a 45-meter yacht, for which he planned a world trip that would last seven years. After many delays, Jack and Charmian London left San Francisco Bay on April 23, 1907, with a small crew, and headed for the South Pacific.
