Maid Sarah Leeson hides the letter wishing Mrs. Treverton's death, and so the disaster is postponed but does not return. His daughter Rosamond, who is married to a blind man, gives birth prematurely and is doomed to the worst blow of a dying confession, detailing the buried secrets of a deceased woman and her relationship with her illegitimate daughter.
