The Diary of a Nobody

by George Grossmith

"Nobody's Diary" is such an unpretentious work that even its author, George Grossmit, did not seem to suspect that he had created a masterpiece. For more than a century, this stunningly comic depiction of the country's life and values has remained in the press, a source of admiration for generations of readers and a great literary influence that is much imitated but never equal. I don't see – because it's no coincidence that I'm "Someone" – why my blog shouldn't be interesting. Mr. Puter is a modestly ambitious man, satisfied with his ordinary life. And yet he always seems to have been annoyed by the objectionable bourgeois, indecisive young officials, and misguided friends, not to mention the inappropriate bride selection of his evil son Lupin. Work as hard as you can, can not avoid the strange failures of life. In Puter's turbulent, absurd but ultimately sweet figure, Grossmites created a remarkable satire on the immortal comic character and the snobbery of a middle-class suburb — someone who also posted the late Victorian craze for spiritualism and circularity, as well as the fashion for daily publishing by anyone and everyone.
