The Greene Murder Case
by S. S. Van Dine
Philo Vance holds his hand when one daughter of the Green family is shot dead in the evening and the other is wounded. The family consists of two sons and three daughters (the youngest is Ada, adopted) under the authority of a bedridden disabled woman who spends her days feeling sorry for herself and cursing her ungrateful children. The family is obliged to live in the Green mansion according to the will of the father. The German chef seems strangely attached to his adopted daughter, and among other hangers, there is his mother's doctor and a mysterious butler who courts Sibella Green.
