The House of the Four Winds
by John Buchan
The Republican government of Eulalonia is failing, and someone is waiting for the throne. But there are two applicants, and each is so powerful that the kingdom stands in balance. The Glasgow gang, known as Gorbalsky Perky, cannot resist the temptation to meddle in such a cynical situation. One by one, they appear where danger acutely arises, for seemingly the most peaceful reasons. But they soon conceive and schematize as deeply as the citizens of Euallonia. Jakee Galt pulls Randal Glind (who enters the upper window from behind an elephant one night) into the plot. Dixon McCune, a middle-aged grocer, pretends to be an archduke dressed in purple, and of course Archie Roilance and Dougal are there too.
