The Hunting of the Snark
by Lewis Carroll
"They searched him with thefts, they searched carefully; They followed him with forks and hope; They threatened his life with a share of railroads; They mesmerized him with smiles and soap." Since Lewis Carroll's ridiculous saga appeared in 1876, readers have joined the ten-member Snark hunting squad and continued their search with great enthusiasm. What are they hunting? What is Snarka? Numerous theories have been proposed. Carroll himself gives a useful preface to the poem and explains it to a reader: "In answer to your question: 'What did you mean that you were a Snarka?' and you will tell your friend that I mean Snark is a Bujum. I believe that you and I will feel quite satisfied and happy now."
