The Hyborian Age
by Robert E. Howard
The Hyborian Period is an essay by Robert E. Howard about the Hyborian period, the fictional setting of his stories about Kimmer Conan. It was written in the 1930s, but was not published during Howard's lifetime. His goal was to maintain consistency in his fictional setting. It details the main events of the prehistoric period, before and after the time of Conan's stories. Defining the disastrous end of the Turian era, a period Howard describes in his stories about Kula, linking both series of stories to a common universe. Other stories will also make connections to real life – The Ghost of the Ring, set in the modern era, includes a Hyborian work, and Kings of the Night brings King Kull forward in time to fight the Roman legions. This article also summarizes the racial and geographical heritage of fictional peoples and Age countries. For example, how gaels derive from howard's Cimmerians. Howard's only novel about Conan, Dragon Hour, expands on the world history presented in this article by presenting a new ancient empire called Acheron, which ruled Hyborian kingdoms in the past.
