The Ill-Made Knight
by T. H. White
Lancelot, although the bravest of knights, is ugly and ape-like, which is why he calls himself the knight malfet - the "Unhappy Knight". As a child, Lancelot loved King Arthur and spent his entire childhood becoming a round table knight. When he arrives and becomes one of Arthur's knights, he also becomes a close friend of the king. This causes some tension as Arthur Guinevere is jealous of his new wife. To please her husband, Guinevere tries to befriend Lancelot and they eventually fall in love. T.H. White's version of the story largely details Lancelot and Guinevere's passionate love. The tension is provided by the tension between Lancelot's friendship with King Arthur and his love and romance with the queen. The third book in the collection is "Once and the future king" .
