The Ladybird
by D. H. Lawrence
Wounded German officer Count Psanek shares his philosophies of life and love with a local acquaintance, Lady Daphne, while imprisoned in London in the final months of the First World War. Lady Daphne discovers that she has been alternately drawn and rejected by the Count, and when her husband returns home from the front, she realizes that her feelings for him are equally ambiguous. For Lawrence, love is never a simple exchange, something both independently personal and completely dependent. Full of symbolism and subtext, "Sunshine" is a story that can be read over and over again, giving the reader a different experience and new perspectives each time.
