The Last of the Mohicans
by James Fenimore Cooper
While the French and Indians besieged Fort William Henry, Cora and Alice Munro, the daughter of a British commander, set out to join him. They are accompanied by Alice's fiancée, Major Duncan Heyward, and the cunning Indian Magu, who secretly serves the French. Magua plans to betray the Iroquois party and declare Cora his dam, but is devastated by scout Hawkeye and his friends Chingachhook and his son Unkas, who deliver the girls to their father. After the fall of the castle, the girls are given a safe passage by the French, but Magua captures them and they become prisoners of the Indians. To save Alice and Cora, Hawkeye and Uncas lead the Mohicans against the Hurons, and this action is fraught with unintended consequences for all of them. "The Last of the Mohicans" is a story of romance and adventure on the American frontier. This is a story about love and loyalty, as well as the advent of America's age.
