The Little Minister
by J. M. Barrie
When it was published, "Little Minister" Barry was quickly described by J.M. as one of the two major literary events of the year, along with Thomas Hardy's Tess of D'Urberville. Within two years, the book had sold for a circulation of more than 35,000 copies. Set in "Thrums," the fictional title of indigenous writer Kirriemoir, the story follows the turbulent love affair of Gavin Dishart, religious "little" minister Auld Licht Kirk, and Babby, a mysterious gypsy woman from Gaddam Wood's fairytale world. Combining realism with romance, humor and pathos, "The Little Minister" shows all the charm and genius touches that will be embodied in the author's later work.
