The Lucky Chance
by Aphra Behn
This is, first of all, an indictment of arranged marriages. Young Letitia Bradwell was bought as the bride for the rebelliously obscene old Sir Phablewood. Weak's friend Fulbank the Cautious also bought her a bride named Julia, who fell in love with a younger, poorer man like Letitia. The women and their lovers decide to end this tradition of marital slavery before Letitia completes her marriage and Phoeble's daughter Diana becomes the next victim.
