The Piazza Tales
by Herman Melville
"Tales in the Square" was written into public outrage over Melville's novel Pierre, which caused him to retreat to the square of his home in Lenoxy, Massachusetts. The six fairy tales featured here are some of Melville's most important works. These include the famous fairy tale "Bartleby", the story of slavery, "Benito Sereno", "Encantade", "Lightning Man", "Bell Tower" and the title story "Square".
