At the same time, his independent-minded young wife, bored with home life and feeling uncomfortable with her contempt for him, puts her marriage at risk, contemplating an affair with an ex-boyfriend. Thus intertwining the traditions of a business conspiracy and a romantic conspiracy, Frank Norris broke with the traditions of his time and brought a new look to the American novel.
