The Pit
by Frank Norris
The story of Frank Norris' "The Pit" can be taken from today's headlines: the businessman begins to speculate on the merchandise market on a small scale, overcomes greed, is dependent on the art of trading, and is filled with an ever-growing appetite for power, while the fortunes of farmers and small investors are recklessly playing in the market while their fortunes are in balance. At the same time, his independent-minded young wife, bored with home life and feeling uncomfortable with her contempt for him, puts her marriage at risk, contemplating an affair with an ex-boyfriend. Thus intertwining the traditions of a business conspiracy and a romantic conspiracy, Frank Norris broke with the traditions of his time and brought a new look to the American novel.
