The Roundheads
by Aphra Behn
Ms. Ben (quite legitimately) made significant deviations from harsh historical facts and the sequence of events for her dramatic purposes. Lambert and Fleetwood pursue supreme power, and both are intrigued by the kind word and influence of Lord Variston, chairman of the Safety Committee. The ladies convene a council to right and investigate the wrongs of the women, but suddenly news emerges that Lambert's followers have turned against him and he is imprisoned in the Tower. The city rebels against parliament and Rump disbands. Unselfish and Freeman rescues Lady Lambert and Lady Desbro, whose old man dies of fear. The parliamentarians try to escape, but leading members of the Committee, Variston, Hoggle and Hewson, find themselves and mistreat the crowd. When they are stopped in prison, people surrender themselves to general fun and joy.
