The Scarecrow of Oz
by L. Frank Baum
L Frank Baum considered Oz's Scarecrow to be his best book. Trot and Cap'n Bill paddle along the Pacific coast, opening with a powerful hurricane that sucks them in and sinks their boats. An old sailor and a little girl miraculously escape and regain consciousness to be in a sea cave. (To this day, Trot claims to have felt the mermaid hug him in those terrible moments underwater.) They go through one perilous adventure after another until they finally make their way to Jinxland, and as soon as Cap'n Bill transforms into a wooden-legged little grasshopper, they meet the Scarecrow, who takes charge of the affairs. Will the captain remain a grasshopper or will the trot, scarecrow and his friends be able to bring back his old form and life?
