The Settler and the Savage
by R. M. Ballantyne
In this story, I have tried to give a true outline of the exciting events of the most important period in the history of the Cape of Good Hope's Colony, albeit inexorably insignificant. Ruyter quietly told the savage that he would then have to accept the consequences, and insisted in addition to the fact that it was absurd to assume that the Infidels were in a position to go to war with white people at the time. It had been almost a year since they had completely defeated and crossed the Great Pisces River in a massive massacre. No prudent warrior would think of continuing to fight at such a time – his young men were killed, their resources were depleted.
