The Shunned House

by H. P. Lovecraft

Over the years, the hero and his uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, have come to admire an old, abandoned house on Benefit Street. Dr. Whipple took extensive notes by monitoring the mysterious but seemingly accidental illness and death of many people who had lived in the home for more than a hundred years. They are also surprised by the strange weeds growing in the garden, as well as an incomprehensible fetid smell and whitish, phosphorescent mushrooms growing in the cellar. After the main character discovers a strange, yellowish pair in the basement, as if with a musty outline of a human form gathered on the floor, he and his uncle decide to spend the night at home and explore the possibility of some kind of supernatural power. They place cribs and chairs in the cellar, equip themselves with military flamethrowers, and equip a modified tube of Crooks in hopes of destroying any supernatural beings they may find.
