The Singing Sands
by Josephine Tey
Inspector Alan Grant, who is on sick leave from Scotland Yard, is planning a quiet holiday with an old-school chum to recover from overwork and mental fatigue. However, while traveling by night train to Scotland, Grant comes across a dead man and a mysterious poem about "walking stones" and "singing sand", which sends him on an exciting quest for the meaning of the poem and the identity of the deceased. Grant, despite the doctor's orders, needs such a random request to calm his nerves. But what starts out as slow entertainment eventually turns into a full-scale investigation that forces Grant to discover not only the key to the poem, but also the truth about the most egregious murder.
