The Sphinx
by Edgar Allan Poe
The Sphinx is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe about a man who decides to visit a relative living near the Hudson River north of New York for two weeks during a cholera epidemic that occurred in the summer of 1832. One day during this visit, a man reads a book by the window, offering a picturesque view of the river. However, his attention is focused on the epidemic, and when he looks up from the pages, a person sees a terrifying sight in the distant hills - there is a huge creature that is bigger than any ocean liner going down!
