The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether
by Edgar Allan Poe
The story follows an unnamed narrator who visits a psychiatric institution in southern France, known for a revolutionary new method to treat mental illness called the "calming system." He recognizes his companion, Monsieur Maillard, the author of the system, with whom he travels, and makes an introduction before leaving the narrator. The narrator is shocked to learn that the "assurance system" has recently been abandoned. He questions this because he hears about his success and popularity. Mayard tells him, "Don't believe anything you hear and you only see half of it." (source: Wikipedia)
