The Thirty-Nine Steps
by John Buchan
Known as the basis for many films, including the brilliant 1935 version directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Thirty-Nine Steps is a classic of popular literature of the early twentieth century. Richard Hanney had just returned to England after many years in South Africa and was exhausted from his life in London. But then a murder takes place in his apartment, just days after he meets by chance with an American who talks about a conspiracy about a murder that could have terrible international consequences. An obvious suspect for the police and an easy target for murderers, Hanney takes a run in his hometown of Scotland, where he will need all his courage and creativity to stay one step ahead of his followers.
