The Variable Man

by Philip K. Dick

The Terran system is constantly growing and expanding. But the old and corrupt Centaurian Empire holds Terra back because it surrounds the Terran system and prevents people from leaving their current empire. For this reason, Terra is at war with Proxima Centaurus and tries to find a way to get rid of keeping the Centaurians on them. Eventually, Terra comes up with the concept of a bomb called Icarus, against which Proxima cannot defend itself. Then the odds begin to juxtapose with Terra, and Terra prepares to fight this new technology. The only problem is that Icarus is not yet running, which prevents Terra from using it against Proxima Centuari. This is where Thomas Cole, known as the Changeable Man, appears. Cole is a man from the past, from the time before World War I. It enters the present (or the future, depending on perspective) as an accident due to the Time Bubble used to explore the past. In the future, he runs away from the authorities and then spends a lot of time trying to escape from them. However, it turned out that this person had a certain genius to fix things and make things work. This is because people come from a time when they had a natural genius and the ability to invent things and solve problems. Read the novel to learn what happened to the Changeable Man and the battle between Terra and Proxima Centaurus.
