The Vinland Champions
by Ottilie A. Liljencrantz
It was the first time in the history of the New World lands that Northman Biorn Gerjulfsson had seen them when he disappeared on a trip to Greenland. But he didn't have enough adventure to disembark and explore them. Then Leif Lucky, son of Eric the Red of Greenland, heard about the negligence and set out to correct it. He rediscovered the land, went to them and named them, then built cabins in a place he called Vinland and spent the winter there. After the ocean came Leif's brother Thorvald Eriksson; but his chances were less, for he was shipwrecked in one cloak and died in another, and his men returned desperately. He was followed by a third brother, Torstein; but this time it did not succeed, for they spent the whole summer wandering in a circle that descended to the west coast of Greenland. And then Torstein died of the plague, leaving his young wife, Goodried, to return to Leif's hospitality in Brattahlid.
