The Wages of Virtue
by P. C. Wren
Montague Merline and his detachment engage in a bloody war in Africa, and all but one person retaliate. Since it is assumed that her husband is dead, Lady Merline remarries, but Montague appears a few years later in an African village with no memory. After learning about his wife's new life, he decides not to destroy his happiness and goes to join the French Foreign Legion. The descriptions of the Legion's garrison life closely match those contained in former legionnaire Edwin Rosen's autobiographical "Foreign Legion."
