The War Chief
by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Arizona region... The land of red deserts, rocks, high backgrounds and mountains is a harsh country, but it is still the land that the Apaches have chosen for themselves. The land made man, and from childhood the Indians were taught to respond to their strength, their cunning, their ability to hunt against violence, and the cruel cruelty against the bravest country. Apaches have raided Mexico for generations of horses, women, and cattle, but they have always treated their own creatures with care and respect. And so, when they found a black-haired boy in a white man's car, and their leader, Geronimo, claimed it on his own, the baby became an Apache. Initially, it was known only as Ish-kei-nay-boy. In the Apache tradition, it had a special name that no one would use, but the public name had to be earned. At the age of ten, Ish-kei-nay killed his first one-armed bear, killing it only with a bow and arrows. Thus, Ish-kei-nay became the Shaz-Digiji-Black Month. And this was only the beginning of a life full of danger and excitement of hunting not only for food, but also against enemies that were becoming increasingly threatening - and among all these enemies, the most pleasant to hunt were white men, who are now beginning to ruin the Apache country. Shaz-Digiji devoted himself to this hunt.
