The Whisperer In Darkness
by H. P. Lovecraft
The story is told by Albert N. Wilmart, a professor of literature at the University of Muscaton in Arkham. When local newspapers report on strange things seen in rivers during the historic flooding in Vermont, Wilmart gets involved in a debate about the authenticity and significance of the observations, although he takes the side of skeptics. Wilmart uncovers ancient legends about monsters living in deserted hills who dared to get too close to their land or kidnapped people who settled down.
