The Wife and other stories
by Anton Chekhov
In this classic story, Chekhov takes a picture of Russian life, emphasizing the harsh difficulties, as well as thin simplits that interact with each other without any problems. The coldness and gloom of the Russian environment cannot be compared with the relationship of the rich aristocrat Pavel Andreich with his wife, who, despite desperately relying on his financial support, is no longer in love, or even tolerant of his husband. Their deteriorating relationship is grounded in starving peasants of the lower classes, emphasizing the long-term tension of a selfish, self-centered man and the struggling kindness of a woman who cares only about herself.
