The hero Charles Anderson takes us back to World War I, his first love, and the advancement of his diplomatic career. The tragedy during World War II almost ends his career. Continuing throughout the novel is Charles' turbulent relationship with his distant and elusive father. The action takes place in the years leading up to the end of the First World War, before the start of the Second World War, this is the story of a British diplomat moving between past and present.
