Twilight in Italy
by D. H. Lawrence
In 1912, D. H. Lawrence first left England and visited Germany, the Alps, Italy. Although Twilight in Italy was the first travel book about the travel experience, Anaïs Nin said that "it cannot be read as a normal travel book because its journey is as symbolic and sensual as it is philosophical." Essays about Germany have a ton of journalistic quests to learn about foreign culture, while essays about the Alps explore the author's intense personal reactions to the fascinating landscape of the mountains. Italian essays create an image of polarity between North and South, a duality that metaphorically extends to all of Lawrence's work. A strong main theme that unites these articles is the impending threat of war.
