Typee
by Herman Melville
Typee was Herman Melville's first novel. First published in 1846, the book was based in part on Melville's own experience as a coastal commissioner in the southern Pacific Marquesas Islands. A romantic voyage through Nuku Hiwa's Pacific Paradise Island is the story of Tommo, a Yankees sailor, and his four-month stay on the island. Tipe, one of Melville's most popular works in his life, offers the reader a fascinating glimpse into the cultures and traditions of the natives who inhabited the islands of the South Pacific.
