Under Fire
by Henri Barbusse
This book tells the story of the departure of French volunteer soldiers at the front in France after the German invasion. The book opens and ends with broad visions common to several characters. Anecdotes are episodic in nature, each of which has a separate chapter name. Unlike many war novels that came out before it, Under Fire depicts war with harsh and brutal realism. A powerful and serious depiction of life on the front lines during the First World War Berbusse's depiction of the horrors and tragedies of war is surprisingly realistic. It draws the reader's attention to the terrible conditions in which soldiers lived and fought due to various anecdotes. Very sensitive and thought-provoking!
