Wintersmoon
by Hugh Walpole
Hugh Walpole's "Winter Moon" reverses romantic romance. Janet Grandison and Wildern Poole marry for communication and comfort. Love is not part of the arrangement. Janet wants to give her sister Rosalind a house; Wildhern wants an heir to his title and property that a married woman he loves cannot give him. Nothing goes according to plan. Rosalind and Wildhern can't stand each other. She marries a man she doesn't like to get away from life in Wintersmoon. Janet finds herself on the wrong side of Wildhern's mother and her entourage. Then she finds herself in love with her husband and pregnant child. Wildhern also fell in love with Janet, but neither of them said anything because they agreed to a marriage without love. The death of their son leads their marriage into a crisis with far-reaching consequences.
